Cleeve Hill

We made a return visit to Cleeve Hill today (we were last here in 2012) though started from a different car park and took a different route!

Weather was a bit cooler, and quite windy on the tops.

After failing to find one geocache, we detoured to a second one, which turned out to be a long abandoned car deep in the woods.

We also failed to find this geocache either….

Further on, we had a break by a ford, and Toby had fun splashing in the river.

The path climbed back up to Cleeve Hill Common and Toby was overjoyed to have a small pool to splash in, complete with a friend to chase.

Further up, there was a bench with a nice view, so we stopped for lunch.

We managed to find our first geocache of the day in a nearby quarry.

And a second one by the source of the River Isbourne

We then wove our way through the golf course to the main viewpoint, looking over Cheltenham and the surrounding villages.

After finding a 3rd cache, we headed back to the car.

7.6 miles today.

Hempstead and Gloucester

A nice day today, though slightly cooler than recently, so off we go on a walk.

This followed a path through Hempstead that has only reopened fairly recently, and now has a number of geocaches along it.

This was a pause by Hempstead Church, waiting for a builder to get off the phone and move away so we could grab the cache.

This is “Lady’s Well”, though I don’t know if this was a real well or just a folly.

The path then goes around a large landfill site, and every gap seemed to have some rubbish that hadn’t quite made it to the dump.

We then went into Gloucester Docks, and tried a new dog friendly pub with a Micro Brewery.

Interesting beer as well.

The view from outside:

On the way back along the canal, we eventually found a very clever magnetic geocache hidden under some metal steps:

Then back for a cup of tea, our progress briefly halted by an open canal bridge.

Robinswood Hill

Todays walk was around a local Country Park at Robinswood Hill. The paths can be a bit muddy in winter, but today they were fine.
We ventured outside the park around a local golf course to find some geocaches – they were easy to find, the footpaths were a bit more of a challenge…

This is Toby being remarkably well behaved while the photo was being taken!

Thames and Severn Canal

It was another nice day today, so we decided to continue our exploration of the Cotswold Canal, this time from Chalford to the tunnel entrance at Sapperton.

image

This section of the canal is much more rural than the Stroud section.

image

After collecting lots of geocaches, we reached the tunnel portal.

image

Then walked up the hill to Sapperton.

image

Where we had lunch on the green.

image

We then returned a different way through some woods filled with wild garlic

image

Then back down the canal, stopping for a beer at a nice dog friendly pub on the way.
The railway line follows the canal along the valley, we often heard trains without being able to see in them. Except for one spot:

image

Then back home. 10.7 miles and 22 geocaches today.

Haresfield Beacon

We went on a familiar but excellent walk at Haresfield Beacon this morning. Nice views and lots of blossom out.

image

In the afternoon, there were chores to do. But the promised rain was cancelled, so we walked along the canal to The Pilot for a few beers in the sunshine.
Then back along the other side of the canal for more beer and pizza.

Frampton on Severn

Steve, Toby and I went for a walk around Frampton on Severn today. The village is misnamed as it is nowhere near the river!
The walk was a mixture of virtually untrodden paths though fields, nice paths through woodland and paths following rivers and canals.

image

We stopped for a refreshing beer at lunchtime:

Then lunch by the canal:

Maisemore and the River Severn

A lovely sunny day today, so we drove to Maisemore (just north of Gloucester) and walked along the River Severn to the Boat Inn at Ashleworth.

image

Some very interestingly packaged geocaches on route.

After a refreshing beer, we headed up the hill to eat our sandwiches.

image

Further on, we walked through a deer farm

image

Then back towards the river, stopping at some more interesting geocaches

An excellent walk, and we now have 2 tired dogs!

Robinswood Hill

This mornings walk was in the local Country Park just outside Gloucester.
It was a nice area, albeit a bit damp underfoot due to a bit of rain overnight.

image

Part of it used to be a quarry – amazingly there were a couple of paths going up the slope (used by the brave or stupid only!)
Halfway up, the views were good – the hill isn’t that high, but when it’s in a river valley, it seems so.

We then climbed up to the beacon at the top

image

Then back down, passing a few geocaches on the way. All in all, a nice walk, though steep in places!

Purton Hulks

We walked from Sharpness to Purton along the Sharpness and Gloucester canal today.
Weather was better than forecast, which makes a nice change!

image

This is a model of a swing bridge that took the railway over the canal (and River Severn) before it was destroyed in 1960. Hidden underneath was a magnetic geocache…

Then past the Purton Hulks, which are old ships used to reinforce the canal bank from the ravages of the River Severn.

We then walked on to Purton to a pub, but it is only now open at lunchtimes on a weekend…

Gloucester Docks 2

We decided to risk going inside the pub for our 2nd beer. A lovely area with comfy armchairs – could have spent all afternoon there…
Toby did very well for the first time he’d been in a pub, though did tend to lunge at the staff carrying plates of food.

Barney just went to sleep…

After finding a few geocaches, we strolled back home along the canal.
